WHERE CAN HELICOPTERS LAND?

Usually the helicopter can land on or near the highway, as long as there is an area 150' by 150' that is clear of trees and overhead wires. However the helicopter creates significant wind turbulence, so if you should be at an accident site, please stay clear of the landing area, and protect your eyes.

All hospitals in the four-state area have a designated landing site for
MAST helicopters. It might be a 1st class heliport, a vacant lot, a golf course, parking lot, or a nearby airport. The helicopter crew and the hospital staff must know where the helicopter will land in an emergency. MAST encourages all hospitals to be aware of the services available and to prepare for the possible emergency in which MAST would be needed. All physicians and hospital administrators may request a MAST mission day or night.

WHAT ABOUT SAFETY RULES AROUND THE HELICOPTER?

1. Never approach the helicopter until signaled to do so by the pilot.

2. Always approach in a crouching position.

3. Never go near the tail rotor of the helicopter; always stay in the pilot's field of vision.

4. Do not smoke within 50 feet of the helicopter.

5. Follow the flight crew instructions in loading and unloading patients.

MILITARY ASSISTANCE TO SAFETY AND TRAFFIC IS SAVING LIVES

WHAT ABOUT ACCIDENTS ON OUR HIGHWAYS:

MAST works closely with the four state Highway Traffic Safety programs. Request for MAST's services for highway accidents are channeled through State Highway patrols, Law Enforcement officials or County Ambulance services. They relay requests for help for remote are accidents - - like the hunter who is hurt in the woods or the farmer injured out in the fields. In case of mass disaster, like a bus, train or plane crash with many victims, MAST can transport several medics to the scene to give emergency treatment and then fly the injured to receiving hospitals.

WHO SUPPLIES THE HELICOPTERS?

Military support is provided by the 50th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) of the 8th/101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. MAST is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Requests are transmitted directly to MAST operations.

WHO PROVIDES THE CIVILIAN SUPPORT?

The all-volunteer MAST Coordinating Committee includes doctors, civil defense directors, hospital administrators, health planners, law enforcement officers, representatives of the media and state government, and others interested in improvement of emergency medical services. The Committee is funded by tax exempt donations to a non-profit cooperation, "TIKI MAST, Inc." This unique service is provided free of charge and all tax-free donations are gratefully accepted.

HOW LONG HAS THE SERVICE BEEN AVAILABLE AND WHAT TYPE MISSIONS HAVE BEEN FLOWN?

MAST has been available in this four-state area since November 1974. Nearly 1900 MAST missions have been flown. Patients included premature infants, burn victims, kidney patients, cardiac patients and many other serious ailments. Units of blood, organs for transplant, and medical equipment have been flown to the hospitals where they were urgently needed.
